On this Seattle hospital remodel, the stump wasn’t just “in the way” — it conflicted with new concrete footings. Concrete can’t be poured over stump remnants because wood eventually rots and can compromise long-term stability. The stump also had heavy “ground swell,” where the root mass rises above grade over decades. Since chainsaws can’t cut into soil without instantly dulling, the final cut was made just above the dirt line — well above true grade. From that cut line, we performed a deep split grind through the core to destroy the stump’s internal structure and give the excavator a clean, efficient pull on the lateral roots. Once the core is broken and ground deep, the perimeter roots snap cleanly, load out fast, and the excavation can move forward without delays.
