Split Grind Foundation Prep (Seattle Builders / Excavators)
On this Seattle hospital remodel, the stump wasn’t just “in the way” — it conflicted with new concrete footings. Concrete can’t be poured over stump remnants because wood eventually rots and can compromise long-term stability. The stump also had heavy “ground swell,” where the root mass rises above grade over decades. Since chainsaws can’t cut into soil without instantly dulling, the final cut was made just above the dirt line — well above true grade. From that cut line, we performed a deep split grind through the core to destroy the stump’s internal structure and give the excavator a clean, efficient pull on the lateral roots. Once the core is broken and ground deep, the perimeter roots snap cleanly, load out fast, and the excavation can move forward without delays.

Seattle Stump Grinding – FAQs

Can concrete be poured over an old stump?
No. Buried wood eventually rots and creates voids that can undermine slabs, footings, and foundations. For Seattle remodels and additions, full stump mass removal or deep split-grind preparation is required before concrete work begins.

What is a split grind?
A split grind is a foundation-prep stump grinding method where the internal core of the stump is ground deep below the final cut line to destroy structural integrity. This allows excavators to snap and extract large lateral roots and fully remove buried stump mass.
